CSL was contracted to design and commission, the mechanical, electrical and automation aspects for the Tuam Regional Water Supply Scheme by the main civil contractor Shareridge. The works involved the extensions of the existing Tuam RWSS network to the east in order to supply Loughrea and surrounding areas with water from Luimnagh WTP. Two new pumping stations and a new reservoir were provided as part of this project. Three existing pumping stations were upgraded as part of the project. CSL provided, installed and commissioned new automation systems at all these sites, the data was send to a new SCADA system in Seefin. Furthermore the data was also send to the existing SCADA system for Luimnagh WTP and a county wide SCADA system.
The summary of the automation scope of supply is as follows:
The telemetry system provides all the data to the SCADA system. The telemetry network is a mixure of UHF radios and 3G routers utilising a secure VPN (virtual private network). The SCADA software provided is based around Wonderware’s Intouch 2020 software. The software combines top-class graphics and smarter functions that provide intuitive operations. The software is installed on an industrial PC complete with a 21 inch monitor. The software provides comprehensive graphics, archiving reporting and alarming. The graphics provide a real-time animated view of the status of all monitored equipment while the trending delivers a reporting tool which provides the user with real-time / historical view of all the data from the plant’s instrumentation. All the data is archived and logged onto the PC’s hard disc. The operator is able to manual control the equipment and change setpoints via the SCADA. The on site PLCs communicate directly with the SCADA via an ethernet link. While the remote sites communicate via VPN connection of a UHF radio modem.
A marshalling PLC was installed to allow the new PLCs that were installed as part of this project to communicate with the existing Luimnagh SCADA system and the East Galway SCADA system using the MODBUS protocol.
